R.I.P Lil Benny…You have been a great asset to the Go-Go world. You will never be forgotten. The energy that Lil Benny bought to a show was truly unbelievable. I can honestly say that I can’t imagine not seeing you perform again. I guess GOD needed you to play the trumpet in heaven. Many blessing and prayers go out to the family, friends and fans.

In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Glory be to GOD. For he is our Alpha and Omega. Amen! I first met Anthony “Lil Benny” Harley in June of 1982 at Kenny & Paul’s Barber Shop located at 2912 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., SE. My mom had just purchased a home in Congress Heights. We were living on Capital Hill prior to that. My cousin Carlos was already living in Congress Heights and he was like “I’m gonna take you to the Barber Shop”. All the Go-Go Celebrities were regulars there. I was 12 years old. Kenny gave me a job sweeping the floor and cleaning up the Barber Shop. I also owned the hand car wash on the Barber Parking Lot. Cherry’s was our spot. I’d like to give a shout out to 4th & O. The venue would be Class Band, Ayre Rade, EU and Rare Essence. All for $7.00. I used to play the keyboard and congo’s for Moses Ziegler’s Band “Physical Wonder”. Moe was also the owner of Cherry’s located at 21 Atlantic Street across the street from Washington Highlands Library. Lil Benny was always the same way whenever I would see him. He was always friendly, cheerful and had a great spirit. “A Celebrity is a Celebrity”. Some Celebrities are non approachable, but Lil Benny was approachable. He was someone you could talk to. Someone who would listen to you and give you his honest opinion. Rare Essence was “The Temptations of Go-Go” and Lil Benny was their “Eddie Kendricks”.That front line was “Proper” with their sychronized dance steps and Lil Benny was the leader. You expected that front line dance steps to be precise and anything else would be unacceptable. Lil Benny was a “Go-Go Mogul”. I can remember Lil Benny performing “Cat In The Hat” at the Capitol Center, but do you remember when the Go-Go Version of “Rumpshaker” was released. The Go-Go Version of Rumpshaker was the Jam of the Summer and Lil Benny was apart of it. Always giving his audience what they wanted. Our brother my be gone from us in the physical form, but his spirit will always live. To know him was to love him. Say his name daily and he will never be forgotten. Job well done Lil Benny. “The Helicopter Has Landed and he is now
    performing for The Father”!

I’m a native 46 year old Washingtonian. I grew up with go go. My top hangouts were Moonlight Inn, Wilmer’s Park, Cherry’s & the Washington Coliseum.

The last time I saw Little Benny was on the Capital Jazz Supercruise in September 09. He performed with Chuck Brown (go go was the opening act). I didn’t see him at first, but then when I heard his voice on the mic, I said to myself “I know that voice”. That was a good ole party. My girlfriend & I danced with Lil Benny at the club on the ship while he was sitting at the bar. He got up to dance with us, but held on tight to the chair!! He thanked us for giving him that dance.

Lil Benny you’ll be missed and I’ll always remember that dance.

thats my Benny, I last saw Benny at Dar Constitution Hall, we talked for about 5 minutes in the hall and I remember I told him just to stay strong and hang in there. He was walking with a cane but he was cranking on that stage with Chuck, all man it was like a old school go go. He will be missed
