JUNE IS BLACK MUSIC MONTH
For the past 31 years, the month of June has been declared Black Music Month. Former President Jimmy Carter signed the first proclamation in 1979. In 2001, then president, George W. Bush also signed a proclamation acknowledging the month long celebration. Who on June 7, 1979, decreed that June would be the month of black music. For the past 28 years, presidents have announced to Americans that we should celebrate Black Music Month.
Today’s Spotlight: Maxwell
Maxwell first entered the music scene in the early 1990’s, with his first album Urban Hang Suite in 1996. Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite sold over 2,000,000 copies, earning 2X platinum status, and was nominated for a Grammy Award. After the success of Maxwell’s first album, he released two more albums Embrya, and MTV Unplugged. After several years off from the music scene Maxwell has gifted his fans with his latest album BLACKsummers’night. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard Albums Top 200 chart. At the 2010 Grammy Awards Maxwell received 6 nominations, including “Best R&B Album” for BLACKsummers’night and “Best Male R&B Vocal Performance” for “Wings.” Pretty Wings” was nominated for the “Song of the Year” which was written by Maxwell.
