Word on the street has it that [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Roberta Flack[/lastfm] (or “Ro” as her friends call her) is making a musical resurgence with her new album. It’s a compilation of her favorite [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Beatles[/lastfm] songs with her own special twist on each. She’s been working hard on it in New York–but almost lost most of her work in a taxi!
She had the new material in a bag that was in a back compartment, and when she got out of the taxi in the pouring rain, she got her suitcase but forgot the bag. (We’ve all done this at some point, right?)
In a near panic, she called the New York Taxi & Limousine Commission and they said they’d take a look. They thought they found it, so she went down there, where everyone of course knew her and made a big fuss over her. Luckily, the bag was there–thanks to an honest taxi driver–and her work was returned to her. Being the good soul she is, Ro left the driver a big fat tip and thanked him profusely. A happy day for ALL of us who enjoy Ms. Flack’s writing and singing.
A few more tidbits…Roberta says she’s not dating, but she’s available, especially for…… younger men. How young? As youthful as 26. Now you know.
Also…[lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lauryn Hill[/lastfm]‘s mom told Roberta that when she was pregnant with Lauryn, she was listening to and constantly singing along to “Killing Me Softly.” Maybe that’s why it was in Lauryn’s DNA to do such a magnificent job on covering the song years later. Kinda makes you warm and fuzzy all over, doesn’t it?
So, what new artist impresses Roberta the most these days? [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Esperanza Spalding[/lastfm]! She’s amazed with the voice, the presence, and the talent Esperanza shows on that enormous double bass she plays in a big way even with her diminutive frame. Two thumbs up for Esperanza from Roberta–high praise, indeed.
We”ll keep you updated on the progress of Ro’s new album and any other interesting developments in her remarkable life. Promise!
