The Comedy Awards seem an unlikely place to find a host of pop’s brightest stars, but The Lonely Island are bringing humor to the charts with the release of second album Turtleneck & Chain on May 10th, featuring a whole host of special guests.

Today Last.fm Trends is looking into the group’s scrobbles and tags to see just how popular their laugh tracks are.

Their first release, 2009’s Incredibad, has racked up 7,872,473 plays from 228,921 listeners – that’s an incredible average of over 34 listens per fan, and it’s still these tracks that dominate their six-month charts.

Star turns have always been an important part of the group’s appeal, with Justin Timberlake, T-Pain and Julian Casablancas helping them out previously, and there’ll be no change there. The new album already promises contributions from Akon, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj, plus a returning JT.

Whilst it has a way to go to match “Like A Boss”, signs are good for their new set.

Comedy tag radio on Last.fm has a varied experience to offer, from the absurd to the ridiculous, but The Lonely Island aren’t quite at the top: that spot still belongs to Tenacious D‘s 1,229,306 listeners. Keep an eye on The Lonely Island’s Last.fm page to see if their new album can make them comedy kings. Meanwhile, Last.fm Trends brings you the news in scrobbles every weekday.
