Two of music’s most heralded R&B artists are joining forces for a series of concerts. Mary J. Blige, the queen of hip-hop soul, has tapped neo soul great D’Angelo to appear on her Liberation Tour.
Canadian songstress Melanie Fiona will serve as opening acts for the gigs. But before the tour kicks off, Blige and D’Angelo will appear at the Essence Festival June 6-8 in New Orleans.
The dates include a show at New York’s Nikon at Jones Beach Theater (August 19), New Jersey’s PNC Bank Arts Center (August 23), Virginia’s Farm Bureau Live at Virginia Beach and Boston’s Bank of America Pavillion.
Aside from the new show, Blige recently addressed old news. The singer added more details about her controversial cameo in a Burger King commercial earlier this year. The TV spot, which featured Blige singing about the wonders of Burger King’s “crispy chicken,” earned her criticism from some in the black community for reinforcing racial stereotypes.

Burger King later apologized for the leaked ad after pulling it from its YouTube channel. Blige revealed that she was shaken up over the public fallout.
“I would never just bust out singing about chicken and chicken wings,” Blige told on Hot 97‘s Angie Martinez. “It hurt my feelings and crushed me for two days.”
Blige added that she wanted to “crawl under the bed” following the outcry from the clip.
“I want to apologize to everyone that was offended or thought I would do something so disrespectful to our culture,” she said. “I would never do anything like that purposely.” —Keith Murphy, CBS Local
