Dr. Dre ranks No. 5 on Forbes’ “Highest-Paid Celebrities” list, which lands him as top earner of all musicians. When it comes to other rappers, singers and producers, it wasn’t even close.
As the only music act to make the top 10, Dre took in an impressive $110 million, according to Forbes.
The iconic hip-hop producer collected much of his recent wealth from his omnipresent headphones line Beats by Dr. Dre, a company he co-founded with Interscope boss Jimmy Iovine in 2006. Last August, handset creator HTC paid $300 million for a 51 percent stake in Beats By Dre. Forbes reports that the Good Doctor owns a third of the company and took home $100 million “before taxes, from last summer’s deal.”
In the elite five, Dre follows media mogul Oprah Winfery (No. 1, $165 million); blockbuster director Michael Bay (No. 2, $160 million); DreamWorks studio head Steven Spielberg (No. 3, $130 million); and movie producer Jerry Bruckheimer (No. 4, $115 million).
Other musicians to make Forbes’ “Highest-Paid Celebrities” list include Elton John (No. 12, $80 million) and Britney Spears (No. 20, $58 million). The list was calculated from May 2011 to May 2012. —Keith Murphy, CBS Local
