Nicki Minaj testifies in her new video for “Freedom,” where she wears a crown of thorns and steps into the sandals of Jesus Christ.
“Freedom” is the latest single from Minaj’s Pink Friday Roman Reloaded: The Re-Up, which officially hits stores today. The colorful rapper gave fans a taste of “Freedom” with a live performance at at the American Music Awards on Sunday (November 18). For her set, she rapped from a frosted bench and strolled through a winter wonderland. She was joined by a choir towards the end of her performance.
For the video, the top Barb takes a different approach. It opens with a staircase that leads to the sky and then a cutaway to the clouds.
Minaj dons a wreath around her head, which calls to mind the Crown of Thorns forced upon Jesus Christ’s head. She also sports a stylized cloak before showing a cross that has been erected in a baran land.

“They’ll never thank me for opening doors/ But they ain’t even thank Jesus when he dies on the cross/ Cause your spirit is ungrateful, b****es is so hateful/ I remain a staple”
Throughout the Colin Tilley-directed video, which begins in black and white but later turns to color, Minaj raps before an ark that has presumably been recently crafted, amidst sweeping images of cloudy skies and lush oceans.
Using biblical imagery is not new to Minaj. The Catholic League blasted the rapper for her 2012 Grammy Award show performance, in which she performed a mock exorcism. With the video for “Freedom” she seems to have exorcised her own demons from the concept. —E. Parker, CBS Local
