While Big Boi has dropped his Viscous Lies And Dangerous Rumors in time for the holidays, he has no plans to release a Christmas album. But the Outkast rapper recalls how the groundbreaking duo put a holiday spin on their first major single.
“We came out on a Christmas album,” Big Boi told CBS Local. “[Some people said Christmas albums] were suicide or career sabotage at first.”
“Player’s Ball” was Outkast’s first shot at a major audience. While fans of their 1994 Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik may remember the song from the debut set, the song first appeared on A La Face Family Christmas Album in 1993.
Sandwiched in between TLC’s “Sleigh Ride” and McArthur’s ”Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” the song was decidedly devoid of the Christmas spirit. But Big Boi said he and Outkast partner Andre 3000 made it a point to stay true to their sound.
“We did a regular song and put some sleigh bells in there and called it a Christmas song,” Big Boi said with a laugh.
Big Boi’s solo disc, Viscous Lies And Dangerous Rumors is in stores now. Below check out what Big Boi says rappers can learn from GRAMMY nominees Mumford & Sons.
