Lupe Comes Back to D.C., Sings from the Heart

By Derek Adams, special to WPGC.com

Last time Lupe Fiasco was in D.C., he was kicked off stage during his Presidential Inauguration performance for repeating his song “Never Said.”

So what did he do to follow up that performance? He gave a performance to remember.

On Wednesday, conscious rapper Lupe came back to D.C. for WPGC’s sold-out last Winter Fling at the Fillmore in Silver Spring. Everyone expected him to do something controversial, but he simply gave a stunning and engaged performance at an intimate venue.

He played all the songs of his new, “Food and Liquor 2, The Great American Rap” album and added two of his most popular hits, “Kick Push” and “Superstar.”

The crowd welcomed him and sang along. He also engaged with the crowd after some songs where he would talk about who he was, why he does what he does and what he believes in. He made comments on people supporting the negativity in the community, saying “we need to be aware of what’s going on around us.”

He also cracked some jokes that had the crowd laughing. Though some could see this as disrespect, I think it’s simply a man stating his opinion, which I can respect and appreciate … especially if his message is to stand up for what you feel is right.

His music is living proof that he is a rebel with a cause.
