LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Prom season is right around the corner, and while many high school students are beginning to think about dresses and dates, Operation Pretty and Polished (OPP) is getting ready to help.
A 2012 survey by Visa Inc. showed that the average cost of prom was more than $1,000 and it is expected to rise. OPP is hoping to reduce the size of that bill.
OPP is an annual giveaway that offers formal prom attire to less fortunate students in the D.C. area. The giveaway is in its fifth year and has helped more than 1,000 students make their prom dreams come true.
WPGC and El Zol are working in conjunction with State Farm, D.C. Metropolitan Police and Once Upon A Prom to provide gently used or new prom dresses and boy’s attire at no cost.
The main event takes place April 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington on Benning Road. The event runs on a first come first serve basis, so get there early.
