Jamie Foxx gave a short, but great address Wednesday at the “Let Freedom Ring” ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of The March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
He is encouraging some of music’s elite to become the next civil rights leaders.
While telling a story about his 19-year-old daughter meeting Harry Belafonte, himself a community activist by 19, Foxx said that the time to step up is now.
“The young folks pick it up now,” he said. “So when we’re 87 years old, talking to the other young folks, we can say it was me, Will Smith, Jay Z, Kanye, Alicia Keys, Kerry Washington… The list goes on and on.”
Foxx closed his speech by praising Belafonte for bailing Dr. King out of jail so he could march in 1963.
