He might rap, “I just want a Picasso” — but according to the New York Post, Jay-Z purchased a $4.5 million Jean-Michel Basquiat piece from 1982 titled “Mecca.”
The artwork is an orange, white and black acrylic with oil-stick work, featuring the Empire State Building under a trademark Basquiat crown.
Jay has been fascinated for years now with the late graffiti artist and fellow Brooklyn native who overdosed on heroin in 1988 at age 27.
Sean “Jay Z’ Carter has referenced Basquiat in several of his songs.
On 2010’s “Most Kingz,” he rapped about being inspired by Basquiat’s paintings.
On “Magna Carta Holy Grail,” he references some $493 million worth of art.
On “Picasso Baby,” he raps, “It ain’t hard to tell, I’m the new Jean-Michel.”
