U. of Md.’s Testudo Statue Set Ablaze
It is a tradition for University of Maryland, College Park students to leave offerings for the Testudo statue in front of McKeldin Library for luck during finals.
But, to the chagrin of students who idolize the iconic figure, the statue caught on fire at some point Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.
University officials say they believe the incident was accidental.
“Testudo” is trending on Twitter, where many passers-by have posted photos of the blaze.
WNEW’s John Domen reports that the statue was all patched up by Wednesday morning, complete with a nose bandage. Someone even left a bottle of lotion for him, to soothe his burns.
