Macklemore Texts Kendrick Lamar Post-GRAMMYs: ‘You Got Robbed’
Even though the two star rappers faced off in multiple categories at the 56th GRAMMY Awards, Macklemore and Kendrick Lamar have grown close since both stars hit the rap scene. Just days before the GRAMMYs, Macklemore and Lamar exchanged a number of texts hyping each other up for the night.
But as Music’s Biggest Night continued, Macklemore swept four categories leaving Lamar empty-handed when the night concluded. The two friends faced off for Best New Artist and Best Rap Album, but Macklemore took the gold trophy home in both categories.
Just twenty minutes after the GRAMMYs ended, Macklemore texted Lamar and posted the conversation to his Instagram account.
“My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album… I’m honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that’s taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it’s proper respect.. With that being said, thank you to the fans. You’re the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career highlight. The greatest honor of all. That’s what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammys”
Both rappers performed during the live show. Lamar teamed up with rock band Imagine Dragons for a remix of “m.A.A.d City” and “Radioactive” that covered both acts in clouds of smoky red paint while Macklemore took the stage with Queen Latifah and Madonna to perform “Same Love,” while marrying more than 30 couples live during the show. Latifah was ordained in the state of California for 24 hours and all the marriages were legally binding.
