Every day during the month of February, WPGC will feature an important moment in Black history. These daily vignettes are read by local children in the District and surrounding areas.
On Feb. 16, 1972, Wilt Chamberlain made history becoming the first NBA player to score 30,000 points. His 7-foot-1 stature made him a prime player for the NBA, starting at 250 pounds as a rookie and bulking up to more than 300 pounds. He also holds other accolades including being the only player to score 100 points in a single NBA game and average at least 30 points and 20 rebounds per game in a season.
In his 13th year playing, Chamberlain scored his 30,000th point, the only person to ever do so. Only five other NBA players have hit the 25,000 mark.
