Many have tried to capture the life of Jimi Hendrix on screen but few have found success spotlighting the legendary guitarist. Now, John Ridley is taking a shot at it and from this clip, he’s right on target. Ridley is the director behind the Oscar-winning film 12 Years a Slave.
Just days before the Hendrix biopic All Is By My Side is set to debut at SXSW, a minute-long clip has surfaced online showing Outkast‘s André 3000’s interaction with Imogen Poots, who plays Linda Keith, famous girlfriend of guitarist Keith Richards.
The clip shows Hendrix asking the woman to join him at the Monterey Pop Festival, which later became the most notable moment of the singer’s career when he poured lighter fluid over his guitar, set it ablaze and smashed it to pieces on stage.
The film follows Hendrix’s journey from 1966 and 1967, just before he amassed global success. Without the blessing of Hendrix’s estate, the film continued without featuring any of his famous songs. Instead, music will include covers from The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Muddy Waters and Elmore James, all songs he was known for covering during his career. Songs the film features include “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” “Wild Thing,” “Mannish Boy,” “Bleeding Heart” and “Hound Dog.”
In preparing for his role, André 3000 did hours of research. “I listened to hours of interviews. I watched films – watched his mannerisms,” he told Rolling Stone, even going so far as to lose weight, take dialect classes and guitar lessons.
