Nick Cannon‘s fans and critics are speaking out after the singer and husband of Mariah Carey posted a photo to his Instagram account painting himself white, wearing a blond wig and giving himself a white persona.
In pursuit of promoting his new album White People Party Music, Cannon posted a series of photos and videos donning himself as a skater boy named Connor Smallnut. He incorporated hashtags he believed a white skater boy would use in a social media post: “It’s official… I’m White!!! #WHITEPEOPLEPARTYMUSIC #Wppm in stores April 1st!!!!!!Dude Go Get It!!!Join The Party!!!! #GoodCredit #DogKissing #BeerPong #FarmersMarkets #FistPumping #CreamCheeseEating #RacialDraft “Bro I got drafted!!”
Many people are speaking out against Cannon’s actions, finding it offensive on both sides. One fan tweeted to the star, asking if he would be so understanding if the tables were turned.
There have been a handful of moments recently where “Black Face” has caused a stir on the Internet, including Julianne Hough’s portrayal of Crazy Eyes from Orange is the New Black and a white Vienna man’s portrayal of Kanye West during a Kim Kardashian appearance.
Cannon seems unfazed by the negative remarks being thrown his way, taking to Twitter to keep his fans and critics chomping at the bit.
Cannon’s forthcoming release will hit stores on April 1.
