‘Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta’ Star Benzino Shot; Nephew Claims Self-Defense
UPDATED: April 2, 2014 at 9:30 a.m.
Star of the hit reality show “Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta” Benzino was shot March 29 while driving in a funeral procession for his mother in Boston, Mass.
Benzino was shot by his nephew, Gai Scott. Benzino has told his side of the story, claiming he paid respects to his mother at the funeral home but had decided not to join in the procession and burial. While he was driving to pick up a friend, he ran into the procession by accident and as he drove up on the left side of it, someone opened fire. He did not name the person.
“There has been growing family tension between Raymond Scott and Gai Scott,” Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said in a statement. “At some point when the cars were side by side, Gai Scott fired several shots into the red Dodge SUV being driven by Raymond Scott [Benzino],” the statement said.
He was rushed to a local hospital immediately and was treated for non-fatal injuries.
On April 1, Scott pleaded not guilty to armed assault with intent to murder in a Plymouth District Court, according to his lawyer Jon Ciraulo.
“When the dust settles with respect to this case, it’s going to be abundantly clear that Mr. Scott, a licensed gun owner, was acting in self-defense and in defense of his family,” said Ciraulo.
