Two years ago today, the world of music and go-go lost its biggest name: Chuck Brown.  The “godfather of go-go” passed away on May 16, 2012 due to complications from sepsis, but that doesn’t mean the music has stopped.

In fact, tonight there is a two-year memorial party for Brown called “Two Years, No Tears” that will feature a lineup of go-go greats including his own daughter, KK.

While go-go hasn’t had as much of an impact outside of the Beltway, it’s D.C.’s best kept secret.  “It’s about love, the communication between performer and audience,” Brown described to MTV. “When you’re on stage, the people put that love to you and you give it back. There’s no other music like it.”

As you remember the life of this funky musician today, play these songs and feel the groove take over.

Note: it’s hard to just pick a few of this legend’s amazing songs.  There are a ton more that can be included, so think of this as an appetizer. Here’s a good Spotify playlist, too!

“Bustin’ Loose”

“Blow Your Whistle”

“We Need Some Money”

“It Don’t Mean a Thing”

“Midnight Sun”

“Run Joe”

“Stormy Monday”

“My Funny Valentine”

“Moody’s Mood”

“Back It On Up”

“Wind Me Up”

“Day-O”

And hey, why not just get a bunch of them at once?  Check out his “Go-go Swing Medley.”
