Spirit Of Washington Lunch Cruise
600 Water St. S.W., Pier 4
Washington, DC 20024
Date: June 15, 2014 at 10:30 a.m.
Dad is sure to get into the spirit when he sees this buffet smorgasbord. Oh, and there’s a cruise too. A warm breeze off the Potomac will be the perfect end to a relaxing afternoon of brunch and entertainment as you, dad and the family cruise along its sparkling waters. When he boards the Spirit of Washington, dad can have his photo snapped to commemorate his relaxing afternoon. With a plentiful buffet, he can eat to his heart’s content as he enjoys a narrated tour of D.C.’s historic waterfront sights visible from the ship’s panoramic windows. Don’t forget to save room for dessert.
Father’s Day Car Show
Warrenton, VA 20186
Date: June 15, 2014 at 9 a.m.
If your dad is a car enthusiast, then this show is right up his alley. It’s packed with lots of shiny, fast cars. The annual car show features a bevy of classic and antique cars, as well as hot rods and motorcycles. Vehicles will primarily line Main Street and some side streets as well. There will be live music, and attendees will be able to take a walking tour of the neighborhood’s historic district and visit local museums.
Deep Tissue Massage
4380 Macarthur Blvd. N.W.
Washington, DC 20007
No, this isn’t a “spa day,” it’s a deep tissue massage. Dads get massages too. A certified therapist performs an hour-long massage and focuses on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia—the protective layer around muscles, bones and joints. Deep pressure is applied in order to release chronic tension. Dad sure could use that.
Private Lives—Stage Drama
Harman Center for the Arts
450 7th St. N.W.
Washington, DC 20004
Date: Through July 13, 2014
Give dad a little drama—the good kind. Private Lives is an irreverent comedy about a divorced couple who inadvertently stays at the same hotel—in adjacent rooms even—while honeymooning with their new spouses. It’s a disaster waiting to happen. But one has to wonder if the two exes will be tempted to rekindle their past romance. Dad will enjoy this quick-witted comedy written by Noel Coward. This is the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s first run of the play.
Even if your dad is the quintessential couch potato, coaxing him outside for fresh air and fun on Father’s Day can set the stage for a good time and memories you make together. There’s something for everyone in the great outdoors, whether your preferred landscape is rural, urban or the highway to somewhere else.
Take To The Water
Rent or borrow a boat, find a tranquil lake and go fishing. If beach bumming is more your style, dress for whatever the weather is in your neck of the woods and cozy up on a blanket with a barbecue. Lazing along the shoreline or participating in water sports always makes for a splendid day. Leaving your mobile phone at home is an added plus.
Find a Festival If walking is more dad’s style, explore one of the many festivals taking place on Father’s Day. Street fairs, carnivals and extravaganzas featuring food, cool stuff to buy, beer, music and more pepper city blocks and Main Streets from sea to shining sea. Let dad pick out his own present while nibbling on a sausage and pepper sandwich.
Picnic in the Park or Eat Out Al Fresco Every Father’s Day has to include some chill time, so pack a picnic basket full of dad’s favorite goodies, or find a restaurant known for delicious, outdoor dining and build in some relaxing time to talk, catch up and enjoy each other’s company. This is not a day to skip on dessert so make sure something decadent and delectable is part of the experience.
