An upcoming Aaliyah biopic has found its leading lady.
The 17-year-old Coleman, who goes by her first name only in show business, is a Disney Channel star whose credits include the TV series Shake It Up. She’s also had a decent music career, hitting the top 40 in the U.S. with the single “Replay.”
While the part has been cast, family members of Aaliyah are fighting to keep the film from production.
Some reports are saying the family is working to keep producers from using Aaliyah’s music in the film. They aren’t against a film, but they believe a TV biopic is too small for the celebrity of the singer.
Since Zendaya’s announcement as the lead role, she has gotten her fair share of backlash.
She was also recently featured on the 16th season of Dancing with the Stars, finishing second to Kellie Pickler.
The film, currently tentatively titled Aaliyah: Princess of R&B, is based off the book Aaliyah: More Than a Woman by Christopher Farley. Aaliyah died Aug. 25, 2001, in a plane crash.
