After accepting the challenge to play Aaliyah then turning down the offer, Lifetime has replaced Zendaya in the upcoming biopic. But, they didn’t search far as they cast another Nickelodeon star – Alexandra Shipp.
Lifetime tweeted the news along with a picture of Shipp transformed into the R&B diva.
Last month, drama ensued when Zendaya was cast for the part, but the singer’s family wouldn’t sign on to license the music. After a few weeks of back-and-forth, Zendaya dropped out of the movie, saying she was “no longer involved with the film.” Lifetime put production on hold until a replacement could be found.
Production will resume later this summer and Lifetime still plans to release the movie in the fall. It will follow Aaliyah’s life from star search to her death in 2001, including her controversial relationship with R. Kelly.
Shipp is most known for her role on the Nickelodeon series “House of Anubis.”
