Scottish director Kevin Macdonald will oversee the project, which was announced today (April 28), and will provide an “unvarnished and authentic” look at Houston’s rise. Sources say he has been involved in mounting a film about her life for some time. The documentary is said to be the only one to have received approval from her estate (via The Hollywood Reporter).

“The story that is never told about Whitney is just how brilliant she was as an artist; by many measures she had the greatest voice of the last 50 years,” Macdonald said. “She changed the way pop music was sung – bringing it back full circle to its blues and gospel roots.” Macdonald will also focus on the darker parts of her life, including her issues with addiction and troubled marriage.

From her immense popular appeal to her sheer talent to her troubled personal life, Houston’s life is a fascinating story and one not unfamiliar to the incredibly gifted.
