50 Cent did what many a celebrity does when they’re caught in a discriminatory situation: He put his money where his mouth is. 50 Cent donated $100,000 to Autism Speaks, the organization confirmed the donation to Radio.com.
The incident that led to the donation began when 50 posted a video on Instagram making fun of a young autistic man, Andrew Farrell. 50 asked Farrell if he was high on the job; the Internet then skewered 50, due to the young man’s condition.
Farrell’s family wanted an apology from the rapper, but they also demanded $1 million. They later softened that request to a $10,000 donation to Autism Speaks (via Hip Hop DX). 50 surpassed that amount tenfold.
“I want to turn this misunderstanding into an understanding,” he said. “There are people that are ignored, mistreated and neglected with disabilities that need our support” (via TMZ).
Hopefully the donation goes beyond a PR stunt, and 50 truly learns something about thinking before he speaks.
