Blake Shelton Defends Beyoncé’s Country Tune ‘Daddy Lesson’

The country world appears to be split on Beyoncé's song "Daddy Lessons."

The country world appears to be split on Beyoncé’s song “Daddy Lessons” from her newest album LemonadeCMT specifically critiqued the song in a brief op-ed called “What’s So Country about Beyonce?” As opposed to the singer’s usual pop and R&B fare, “Daddy Lessons” has a country bent encased by Louisiana brass and Texas blues. Defending an artist’s right to explore all genres no matter what, Blake Shelton had some choice words for those who don’t think Beyoncé should’ve attempted a country sound.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight backstage at The Voice taping Monday (May 2), Shelton said, “People that criticize can kiss my a–. That’s what I say. I can’t believe people that don’t contribute to music that criticize music, it just blows my mind and Beyoncé–tell them to kiss that a–, is what I would do.”

Shelton isn’t alone in his admiration for the song. The Dixie Chicks recently covered it while performing in Manchester, England.

So, yeah, while Shelton by no means should even have to defend Beyoncé’s “Daddy Lessons,” considering how often country music has dabbled, borrowed and done all manner of things with country music, it seems as though artists and musicians are a fan of the track, while it’s the critics who need to catch up.
