Young Thug Drops ‘Elton’ Feat. Wyclef Jean Off ‘Jeffrey’

By Amanda Wicks

Young Thug doesn’t believe in record cycles. No, he likes releasing music whenever he feels like it, thank you very much. The Atlanta rapper is gearing up to release his third—that’s right third—mixtape of 2016. Jeffrey was originally scheduled to drop August 16, but on that day Thug took to Instagram to share it would be available in two days.

Instead of gifting fans with the mixtape today (August 19), Thug shared a new song “Elton” featuring Wyclef Jean off that project. The song comes in at nearly six minutes and mixes a harder rap feel with a relaxed island vibe. If those two things seem oddly paired, Thug finds their middle ground to create something equal parts energetic and chill. Jean repeatedly sings “Jeffrey” throughout the song, referencing Thug’s real name Jeffrey Lamar Williams.

Thug shared the tracklist on Instagram with each song being named after someone he admires. Names include Swizz Beatz, Floyd Mayweather and Birdman (via XXL).

Already this year, Young Thug has released two previous mixtapes. He dropped I’m Up in February and Slime Season 3 in March. With Jeffrey slated to appear before August’s end—hopefully—that leaves at least a few more months for him to share number four.
