Shawty Lo was killed in a car crash on I-285 in Atlanta at 2:20 a.m. Wednesday morning. Police believe it may have been a hit and run but have yet to find the other car involved in the crash.
The late rapper’s manager confirmed the news to CBS Atlanta affiliate WGCL-TV.
Police say the 40-year-old rapper lost control of his Audi and hit several trees, causing the car to overturn and catch fire. As WGCL-TV reports, Shawty “was ejected from the vehicle and died on the scene.” Two female passengers who were also in the car were taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The rapper was best known as a founder of D4L Records, as well as the rap group D4L. In 2008, his solo debut spawned “Dey Knew,” a lead single that peaked at #31 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In 2011, Shawty — born Carlos Walker — signed D4L Records as an imprint of 50 Cent’s G-Unit South label.
The rapper courted controversy in 2013 when he filmed an unaired documentary called All My Babies’ Mamas, which addressed the 11 children he had with 10 different women. At the time, critics lambasted the premise and said it glorified an unstable family.
Rappers reacted to the news of Shawty’s death on Twitter.
