A diner at Anita’s New Mexico Style Cafe in Ashburn, Virginia, on Saturday stiffed the waitress and left a racist message on the check.
“Great service don’t tip Black people” was written at the bottom of the $30.52 bill.
The Loudoun County chapter of the NAACP originally shared a picture of the receipt with the message, “Hatred will not be tolerated and we will not keep quiet. This has been confirmed and did happen per Mgr @ Anita’s in Ashburn.”
The restaurant’s owner, Thomas Tellez, confirmed to the Loudoun Times-Mirror: “It’s real. It did happen.”
“I was appalled,” Tellez told NBC Washington. “I’m outraged.”
Kelly Carter has been a waitress at Anita’s for several years. “It was just total shock,” she said to NBC. “I looked at the receipt three times.”
However, Carter says, “I keep my head up. I have to keep moving. One hateful remark will not stop me.”
A YouCaring fundraising page set up for Carter has so far raised $680 of the $2,000 goal.
