On Thursday, the U.S. Mint announced a new $100 gold coin that depicts an image of Lady Liberty as a black woman. This marks the first time that Lady Liberty will be portrayed as a woman of color on United States currency.
The coin depicts a black woman with a crown of stars on her head, the years 1792 and 2017 are to her left and right, respectively.
The coin comes as the mint celebrates its 225th anniversary.
The mint says this coin is the first in a series of 24-karat gold that will show Liberty in other designs; representing Asian-Americans, Hispanic-Americans and Indian-Americans.
